국내 연구진, 탄소나노튜브 회로 구현 기술 개발
국내 연구진이 탄소나노튜브를 기판 위에 회로 등 원하는 형태로 만들 수 있는 새로운 기술을 개발, 탄소나노튜브 전자소자의 대량생산 가능성에 한걸음 다가섰다.
서울대 기계항공공학부 서갑양 교수와 박사과정 김필남 씨 연구팀은 30일 탄소나노튜브 용액을 나노미터 크기의 구멍으로 흘려보내는 방법으로 넓은 면적의 기판 위에 탄소나노튜브를 원하는 형태로 정렬하고 부착하는 기술을 개발했다고 밝혔다.
이는 기판 위에 탄소나노튜브 회로를 구현할 수 있는 기술로 탄소나노튜브 칩 등을 대량 생산하는 데 필요한 기반기술로 평가되며 최근 나노기술분야 국제학술지 ’스몰(Small)’에 소개됐다.
탄소나노튜브는 우수한 물리적, 전기적 특성으로 차세대 전자소자 재료로 기대를 모으고 있으나 소자구조 내에 탄소나노튜브를 원하는 형태로 정렬하는 것은 매우 어려운 것으로 알려져 있다.
서 교수팀은 이 연구에서 황금 또는 실리콘 기판 위에 원하는 형태의 통로가 만들어진 고분자물질을 부착한 뒤 그 통로에 탄소나노튜브가 들어있는 용액을 흘려보내는 방법으로 탄소나노튜브를 원하는 형태로 정렬하는 데 성공했다.
연구팀이 탄소나노튜브의 틀로 사용한 고분자물질은(PEG-DA)은 전기적 특성에 따라 기판에 붙였다 뗐다 할 수 있으며 50~200㎚ 크기의 통로가 만들고자 하는 형태로 뚫려있다.
탄소나노튜브 용액을 고분자물질 틀과 기판 사이에 있는 나노 통로에 흘려보내면 모세관현상에 따라 탄소나노튜브가 통로를 따라 흐르면서 기판에 달라붙고 액체를 증발시킨 뒤 고분자 틀을 떼어내면 기판에 원하는 형태로 정렬된 탄소나노튜브가 남게 된다.
서 교수는 “이 연구결과는 탄소나노튜브를 아주 작은 크기의 소자로 만들기 위한 커다란 진전”이라며 “특히 다루기 어려운 탄소나노튜브를 유체공학을 이용해 정렬하는 것은 탄소나노튜브 소자의 대량생산 문제를 해결하는 데에도 기여할 것”이라고 말했다.
