서울대학교 공과대학(학장 강태진)은 10월 21일 12시, 서울대학교 엔지니어하우스에서 신양공학학술상 시상식을 가졌다. 이 상은 서울대 공대 동문인 태성고무화학(주)의 창업자인 정석규(鄭晳圭, 81) 신양문화재단 이사장이 모교의 젊은 교수들을 위해 제정한 상이다. 정 이사장의 호를 따 ‘신양공학학술상’으로 명명한 이 상은 서울대학교 공과대학 재직 교수 중 부교수 및 정교수로 승진하는 젊은 교수 중 업적이 가장 뛰어난 교수를 선발하여 시상한다.
이번 신양공학학술상은 건설환경공학부 박준범, 재료공학부 김영운, 화학생물공학부 김재정, 전기공학부 김성철, 기계항공공학부 서갑양, 조선해양공학과 김용환 교수 등 총 6명에게 수여하였으며 부상으로 천만원씩의 신양 공학연구기금을 전달했다.
정 이사장은 서울대 화학공학과를 졸업(1952년)한 후 50여년간 키우고 운영해 온 회사를 지난 2001년에 매각한 자금으로 신양문화재단을 설립하였으며 첨단 정보검색실과 열람실을 구비한 도서관인 신양학술정보관 I 을 2004년에 서울대에 건립, 모교에 기증한 바 있다. 또한 2005년 9월에는 신양문화재단을 신양학술정보관 4층으로 이전하여 본격적인 장학사업을 펼치고 있으며, 서울대학교 내에 신양학술정보관 II호관을 추가로 건립하였고, III호관도 건립중에 있다.
