Shock waves present one of the most interesting phenomena in Nature and since quite some time they have become the tool of choice for the treatment of kidney stones. Still, the physics of the shock propagation in tissue and the effects it induces remain to be researched and understood.
Propagation of the shock wave in a medium is governed by a set of equations composed from laws on the conservation of mass, momentum and energy, as well as the equation of state of the medium. For the liquid mediums under moderate pressures, an equation of state of the Tait form is assumed. This equation has two dependent parameters, which are determined empirically. This talk will report on the calculation of these parameters by experimental measurements of shock velocities and pressures, and determination of the shock Hugoniot for several liquids, which model the biological tissue.
An additional topic in relation to shock waves is the experimental measurement of the properties of the media behind shock front. Apart from imagining techniques, such as shadowgraphy, Schlieren, holography, and alike, novel optical spectroscopic methods are being developed. Such a method, termed laser-induced thermal acoustics has been proven to accurately measure speeds of sound for at least semitransparent media. Part of this talk will discuss the possible application of this technique to shock wave measurements.
Finally, the talk will conclude with a presentation of a technique for acceleration of microparticles by means of laser ablations. This technique is to be used in medicine for nonintrusive drug delivery.
