6. 내용요약 : In this seminar, we will review the classical application of Micro-electro
mechanical systems, and then mainly discuss the application of microfabrication in hepatic tissue engineering, specifically focusing on bioartificial liver (BAL) development. Due to the limited availability of human livers for transplantation, there has been a strong motivation for the development of bioartificial liver devices which would serve as a bridge device to transplantation or to spontaneous recovery. However, due to the design constraint, stability of cellular functions in BAL, and oxygen supply,
the development of BAL has been challenging issues. Utilizing MEMS technology we have developed a microfabricated flat-plate bioreactor which utilizes a grooved-substrate for hepatocyte attachment. This device helps satisfy the design criteria required for an optimally functioning bioartificial liver device. We will also discuss the engineering of stem cells into hepatocytes, which could serve as a cell source for hepatocyte transplantation and bioartificial liver devices.
