The industrialized part of the world is experiencing significant aging and at the same time there is access to financial resources that allow people to make choices as to how they want to live. Quality of life is typically characterized by independence and autonomy. Modern day robots can facilitate such autonomy and assistance. A major challenge is, however, in the design of systems that are accessible to the average citizen.
Over the last decade significant growth has been reported for consumer robot use. The
systems that are in use today can in general characterized as targeted with well specified applications and limited interaction with users. An obvious design choice is between targeted and more general purpose systems. Clearly from a research perspective it is of interest to build more general systems. This requires competencies for interpretation of the environment and people in it and design of facilities for intelligent interaction with users. In this presentation we will present methods for navigation and manipulation of objects in the environment and new progress on design of human robot interfaces to enable people to use such systems through a combination of spatial modelling, spoken dialog systems and interpretation of human gestures. Finally, we will point to how such systems are starting to be used in real world appliances and assistive devices.
