Dr. Taeghwan Hyeon is a full Professor in the School of Chemical and Biological Engineering and currently SNU Distinguished Fellow at Seoul National University. He received BS (1987) and MS (1989) from SNU (Chemistry) and PhD (1996) from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Inorganic Chemistry). He did postdoctoral work at Northwestern University before joining SNU in 1997. He received several awards including POSCO-TJ Park award (2008), DuPont Science and Technology Award (2005), and Korean Young Scientist Award (2002). His research work on large-scale synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles received a lot of attention. His current interests include fabrication and biomedical applications of multifunctional nanoparticles.
6. 내용요약 :
We developed a new generalized synthetic procedure, called as “heat-up process,” to produce uniform-sized nanocrystals of many transition metals and oxides without a size selection process. Very recently we were able to synthesize uniform oxide nanocrystals as much as 1 kilogram-scale from the thermolysis of metal-oleate complexes. We used non-hydrolytic sol-gel reactions to synthesize various transition metal oxide nanocrystals including ZrO2 nanocrystals, Sm2O3 nanobeams, CeO2 nanowires, ZnO nanorods, FeOOH nanotubes, and TiO2 nanorods. We synthesized uniform nanocrystals of various metal chalcogenides from the reaction of metal chlorides and chalcogen reagents. The synthesized nanocrystals include PbS nanocubes, ZnS nanorods, 1.4 nm thick CdSe nanosheets and Mn2+ doped CdSe nanoribbons. Clever combination of different nanoscale materials will lead to the development of multifunctional nano-biomedical platforms for simultaneous targeted delivery, fast diagnosis, and efficient therapy. In this presentation, I would like to present some of our group’s recent results on the designed fabrication of multifunctional nanostructured materials based on uniform-sized nanoparticles and their bio-medical applications. We developed a new T1 MRI contrast agent using biocompatible manganese oxide (MnO) nanoparticles, exhibiting detailed anatomic structures of mouse brain. We reported on the fabrication of monodisperse nanoparticles embedded in uniform pore-sized mesoporous silica spheres and PLGA polymers for simultaneous MRI, fluorescence imaging, and drug delivery. We used ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals for T2 MRI contrast agent for tracking transplanted pancreatic islet cells. We synthesized hollow magnetite nanocapsules and used them as both the MRI contrast agent and magnetically guided drug delivery vehicle.
