6. 내용요약 :
In painting, as in the other arts, there is absolutely no process,
however little it may be, that would agree to be put in formulas.
Auguste Renoir (French painter)
The purpose of the present talk is to explore the physics of painting from a
strictly mechanical point of view despite Renoir’s pessimistic argument. In an
atelier, an artist dips a brush into a pot of paint to see brush hairs crumple as
impregnated with the liquid. He brings the wet brush to the canvas, the liquid
spreads on it, and he moves a brush to ply his art. We scrutinize each step of
the painting and rationalize them through physical principles. In addition to the
work associated with classical painting, we introduce the microscale version of
Jackson Pollock’s paint dripping and the nanoscale pottery technique. The
practical relevance of these studies is shown to be far beyond what might be
first envisaged.
