6. 내용요약 :
A mechanical engineer equipped with old classical tools of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics entered a terrain of the so-called electronics and IT industry. He tried to employ his tools in breaking the paths. However, he found over the years that his tools should be renovated or simply abandoned at once. Instead of automobiles, ships, and rockets of his favorite subjects, he had to cope with such esoterically sounding things as optical fibers, TVs, semiconductor memories, LCDs, cellular phones, parallel computers, laser printers, OELDs, or even image compression softwares and WDM algorithms. Sooner or later his attitude underwent some changes to fall (sort of) in love with those new friends. He found a refuge in classical optics and slowly moved towards the nano-optics, and recently quantum optics. He will recall his initial phase of adjustment by trying to find numerous analogies between mechanical engineering and nano-photonics. Later, he will take some examples in nanoparticles, nanoshells, photonic crystals, optical waveguides. He will show that the difference between turbulent flows and acoustic waves has its exact counterpart in the description of electrons’ motion: highly correlated electrons (by the Schroedinger equation) versus collective electrons (the plasmonics). Anybody who has a basic experience with the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics and/or the Navier equations of elastodynamics will have no problem in understanding the nano-optics, because the latter is described basically by the linear Maxwell equations.
