A new disruptive technology enabling efficient chemical analysis has been studied and developed based on a 30 year $50M investment at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The technology is LIBS and laser ablation ICP-MS. At LBNL, we advanced this technology through understanding of fundamental principles and development of conditions for accurate-precise analysis with down to nanometer scale spatial resolution. For chemical sensing applications, capabilities include no sample preparation, no consumables, no waste products, nominal sample requirements (nanograms or less), real-time monitoring, and identification of every element on the periodic chart, including their isotopes. Traditionally, LIBS has been emphasized for elemental analysis, with recent demonstrations of molecular classification using chemometric processing of broadband spectra. We demonstrated the ability to measure isotope signatures in laser plasmas by measuring the molecular species that form as the plasma cools. The new technology is called LAMIS (Laser Ablation Molecular Isotopic Spectroscopy).
Dr. Russo founded ASI in 2004 to commercialize laser ablation/spectroscopy technologies for biomedical, semiconductor, environmental and defense applications. He has over 220 scientific publications 45 refereed proceedings 250 (115 invited) presentations, 9 book chapters and 11 patents.
