Abstract: This talk will review the research thrust in biomedical sensors and subsystems conducted under the Wireless Integrated Microsystmes (WIMS) Center at the University of Michigan.  The goal of the thrust is to significantly improve health care through major advances in two areas: wireless implantable microsystems and microfluidic biochips.  The primary emphasis is on interfaces to the nervous system, active cardiovascular stents, an intraocular pressure sensor for use in treating glaucoma, and microfluidic platforms for diagnostic and drug screening assays.  The two neural microsystems have been developed: a cochlear microsystem for the deaf and a cortical microsystem for possible use in a prosthesis for paralysis.  Several microfluidic platforms will be introduced for diagnosis and/or prognosis of disease, cancer drug screening, and artificial organs.  A few examples of device operation and assay results will be discussed followed by specific target applications.

Bio: Euisik Yoon received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics Engineering from Seoul National University in 1982 and 1984, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1990. He worked for semiconductor industries at the Fairchild Research Center of the National Semiconductor Corp. in Santa Clara, CA and Silicon Graphics Inc. in Mountain View, CA before he cameback to academia. He took faculty positions at KAIST, Korea(1996-2005) and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN (2005-2008). During the academic year of 2000-2001, he was a Visiting Faculty at Agilent Laboratory, Palo Alto, CA. In 2008, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, where he is a Professor and the Director of Solid-Sate Electronics Laboratory (SSEL) and the Director of Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (LNF).
Dr. Yoon has served on various Technical Program Committees including Microprocesses and Nanotechnology Conference (1998), International Sensor Conference (2001), IEEE AP-ASIC Conference (2001-2002), Transducers Conference (2003, 2005), IEEE IEDM (2006-2008) and IEEE MEMS Conference (2006, 2009, 2010). He also served on IEEE ISSCC program committee (2003-2007) and was a general chair of International Symposium on Bio Micro & Nanosystems (2005).
