The U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) evolved out of three ideas brought together in the late 1980’s: The Global Positioning System (GPS) integrity channel, wide area differential GPS, and the provision of ranging signals from geostationary satellites. These three ideas integrated together form the core of the WAAS concept and each component addresses particular areas of concern when attempting to use GPS for the guidance of aircraft. There are strict international requirements for any system providing aircraft guidance with respect to accuracy, integrity, continuity, and availability that GPS cannot fulfill on its own. The wide area differential corrections improve the overall system accuracy and improves continuity, the integrity monitoring ensures the system safety, and the additional ranging source helps to maintain continuity and availability. Together these allow WAAS to safely guide aircraft both horizontally and vertically to within 200 feet of the ground.
WAAS was first certified for operation in 2003. It has been steadily improved over its lifetime and today successfully serves over 2,500 airports with more than 5,500 procedures. The U.S. is continuing to improve WAAS as GPS is modernized and new constellations are fielded. Stanford University has participated in this development from the very beginning. This talk highlights the development of WAAS, some of the key technical challenges that were overcome, and where its future development is heading.
