Failures of engineered systems can lead to significant economic and societal losses. To minimize the losses, reliability must be ensured throughout the system’s lifecycle in the presence of manufacturing variability and operational uncertainty. This talk presents recent advances in Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) technology that can ensure high reliability and maintainability of complex engineered systems through autonomous detection, diagnosis, prediction, and mitigation of adverse events during various missions of the systems. PHM technology consists of three key functions: (i) health sensing function, (ii) health reasoning function, and (iii) health prognostics function. The health sensing function concerns about how to design a sensor network for maximal detection capability of potential damages. The health reasoning function helps extract system’s health information in real-time and classify system’s health condition. The health prognostics function can predict potential failures and/or remaining useful life (RUL) of engineered systems in real-time. In the end, advanced topics in each function will be demonstrated with energy-related systems including power transformers, power generators, wind turbine, and Li-ion battery.
