The development of functional nano-materials for interface with biological systems is critical to the next phase of nano-biotechnology. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts in graphene-based nano-bio interface, in particular, developing nanoelectronic and nanophotonic biological signal transducers. First, I will present soft, nanoelectronic graphene bioprobes which can be used to monitor electrical activities of electrogenic cells/tissues in high spatio-temporal resolution. I will discuss our unique monolithic graphene-graphite nanostructures and their capacity for nanoscopic field-effect detection of chemical and biological signals and mechanically flexible and robust interface with biological systems. Second, I will present a nanophotonic nanopore platform which is based on graphene. I will discuss graphene nanopores integrated with optical antennae in which the formation of graphene nanopores and integrated plasmonic optical nanoantennae are realized in a single step. The significance of our nanophotonic transducers is demonstrated by plasmonically enhanced fluorescent signals during single DNA translocation events through a graphene nanopore. We believe our efforts in developing new functional nano-bio interface will lead to advanced nano-biotechnology in the future.
