5. 내 용 : Recognition of the roles of common refrigerants in destruction of stratospheric ozone, action as greenhouse gases contributing to global climate change, and further environmental concerns catalyzed rapid introduction of alternatives, both to service existing systems and for use in new equipment. International treaties and national laws and regulations now control both the production and emissions of these refrigerants. The presentation will summarize thermodynamic, environmental, and other analyses of refrigerant options for chillers, machines that cool water or other liquids for use in large air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. The presentation will address chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), hydrocarbon (HC), and inorganic (such as ammonia) fluids. Selections among them become more complex when conflicts in desired properties for the separate environmental and for performance considerations are taken together. The analyses show that there neither are nor can be ideal refrigerants. They also show that responding to environmental issues individually can lead to choices with more negative than positive impacts. Taken together, the findings point to the need for integrated assessments. The presentation will outline necessary considerations and both regulatory and research directions.

6. 연사약력 : James M. CALM is an internationally-recognized engineering consultant. He specializes in heating, air-conditioning, and refrigerating systems, and much of his work involves the application and safety of alternative refrigerants. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an elected member of both Sigma Xi (the international honor society for scientific and engineering research) and Tau Beta Pi (the honor society for engineering), and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is a former vice president of both the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute and the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Institute in the USA. Before that he served as technical director of the International Energy Agency Heat Pump Center, then in Germany, and worked on sabbatical in the Fluids Engineering Department of the Institut CERAC in Switzerland. He also served as Manager of Heat Pump Research for the Electric Power Research Institute and of Thermal Storage and Community Energy Systems for Argonne National Laboratory, both in the USA. Mr. Calm is the vice chairman of the ASHRAE standards committees responsible for refrigerants safety classifications for building energy efficiency, both widely adopted into laws and regulations in the USA and other countries. He also serves on the committee responsible for the safety standard for refrigeration systems, and is a member and chapter lead author of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Technical Options Committee on Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Heat Pumps. He holds bachelor (cum laude) and master of science degrees from Tufts University in the USA and is a registered professional engineer. He has designed mechanical systems for construction or renovation of more than 250 large buildings, overseen construction and operation of critical facilities both in Italy and the USA, and authored or co-authored more than 150 technical publications.
