The main features of solid fuel ramjets (SFRJs) and scramjets are summarized based on comprehensive theoretical and experimental studies done at the Sylvia and David I. A. Fine Rocket Propulsion Center of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. One of the recent highlights has been the design and flight test of a two-stage solid fuel ramjet rocket vehicle, for the first time in Israel. Solid fuel ramjets and scramjets are the simplest air breathing engines. They can provide propulsion solutions in the supersonic and hypersonic flight speed ranges, respectively, with substantially superior energetic performance to that of rockets. Over 1000 static firing tests provide good database on flame holding and fuel regression rate. Particular potential use for increased-range gun-launched projectiles is identified. Efficient combustion in miniature (5-10 mm internal diameter) SFRJ combustors as well as self sustained supersonic combustion in scramjet combustors is demonstrated. One of the main conclusions is, that once sufficient specific thrust can be obtained, the solid fuel scramjet may be the most straight-forward hypersonic air breathing propulsion means to be implemented. The presentation will include a number of short video clips from actual tests.
