This seminar presents the research activities of Numerical Analysis which has been
performed in JAXA in order to pursue a technological solution for helicopter noise
reduction. At first, a brief introduction of JAXA and Research Program will be
presented. In second part, numerical analysis approach of JAXA to solve helicopter
noise problems will be introduced. It include a brief history for analytical tools of helicopter aerodynamics and acoustics developed in JAXA(since NAL) and several
numerical methods to get more accurate solution. A moving overlapped grid
system is used with three types of grid including rotor grid, inner background
grid and outer background grid for helicopter flight simulation. The helicopter
rotor noise is predicted using a combination method of an unsteady Euler code
with an aeroacoustic code based on the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings
formulation. In third part, applications in helicopter noise problems will be
presented. It includes numerical research works to reduce two major helicopter
noises: Blade Vortex Interaction (BVI) noise and High Speed Impulsive (HSI) noise.
To reduce BVI noise of helicopter, several active control methods such as higher
harmonic control (HHC), active tab control (ATC), and active flap control (AFC)
are analyzed. It also includes maneuvering flight analysis for a helicopter in
general motion. To reduce HSI noise, passive control method is studied using
blade planform optimization.
