5. 내 용 :

This presentation deals with microfluidic researches based on biochip & biosensor technology. At present, the biochip, biosensor researches have become interdisciplinary topics in optical, electrical, mechanical, and biochemical fields. This seminar will introduce a trend in biochip and biosensor researches, basic fabrication methods, and several interesting applications. The main contents are composed of five parts: (1) a microfluidic ATP-bioluminescence sensor for the detection of airborne microbes, (2) the measurement of biochemical thermal reaction in microfluidic channel using dual-thermopile, (3) the continuous, flow-through sorting of microbeads in a magnetic field, (4) an impedimetric biosensor for real-time monitoring of bacterial growth, and (5) continuous size-based sorting of microspheres using a multi-orifice microchannel. The speaker’s on-going research is the development of particle separation techniques using hydrodynamic forces. This speaker developed a new microfluidic method, so-called multi-orifice-self-pinching-flow-fractionation (MOSPiFF), for ontinuous size-based separation of microparticles. This method is performed by the combined use of inertial lift forces and Vena Contracta generated in a series of contraction/expansion microchannels. He found that with Rec of 63~91, a large particle (~15㎛) is focused on the centerline of channel, while a small particle (~7 ㎛) migrates near side walls. This method is useful for a high throughput and continuous separation, and can be applied to the depletion of cancer cells in patient samples without any dilution and labeling.
