6. 내용요약 :
Conventional experiments with biological samples involve macroscale manipulation of fluids and cellular environments. Recent developments in microfabrication in the field of microelectronics and mechanical engineering are bringing profound change in how biological system can be handled. Microfluidic systems have great potential in biological research. Microfluidic system can serve the promising opportunities for the control of microenvironmental stimulus in-vitro. This presentation will outline various fabrication approaches and devices that have been developed to manipulate the cellular microenvironment to better mimic in-vivo conditions. For understanding of many biological phenomena, microfluidic device fabrication should be considered about (i) structural modification of channels, and (ii) chemical / biomolecular gradients in cell culture system. The structural modification can be manipulated with micro/nanostructures. These physically modified structures give a various changes of mechanical dynamics or flow conditions to cells inside a channel. A various range of biological process including development, inflammation, wound healing and cancer metastasis, chemical / biomolecular gradients play a critical role in these phenomena. Microfluidic gradients may mimic these biological phenomena that are present in-vivo. This presentation will present an overview and examples of applying engineering approaches and techniques to control and manipulate the microenvironments of cells.
