5. ABSTRACT :
A large number of robot manipulators have been designed over the last half century, and several of these have become standard platforms for R&D efforts (PUMA 560, KUKA, DLR, Barrett arm). As actuation systems have become more powerful and miniaturized, it has become possible to build dynamical robot systems to perform dynamic tasks like juggling and ping pong. However, it still remains a challenge to get access to a high-performance robot; more generally, robotics has lacked standard systems upon which comparative research can be performed. This talk describes the design of a high-performance robot manipulator that is built from off-the-shelf components to allow easy replication. It is designed to have enough dynamics to allow ball catching. The application scenario, platform design and construction, and performance evaluation of the system are described in detail.
