Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) offer several advantages over conventional vehicles such as better fuel economy and lower emissions. However, HEVs need additional powertrain components including a generator, drive motors, a large battery pack, and a power bus, all of which require proper thermal management. herefore, dedicated cooling circuits for the hybrid components are required due to onsiderable heat rejections and different cooling requirements of the components. Thus, a more strategic approach is required when designing the VTMS for the HEV. In this study, numerical simulations of the VTMS and the powertrain system of a Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SHEV) are developed to investigate the thermal response and power consumptions of the VTMS. The powertrain system model and VTMS model are integrated to evaluate the VTMS architecture design based on the fuel economy and performance of the vehicle. Three fferent cooling system architectures constructed with different concepts are modeled and the factors that affect the performance and power consumption of each cooling system are identified and compared with each other. This study presents the guidelines for the VTMS architecture design of SHEVs and shows that the VTMS architecture design of the advanced vehicle should be developed considering various cooling requirements of powertrain components, power management strategy, performance, parasitic power
consumption, and the effect of driving conditions.
