Superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces which results from a combination of hydrophobicity and surface roughness in micro- and/or nano-scales lower the free energy of an air-water interface such that, in certain situations, air pockets are stably entrapped between the surface features, thereby creating a significant effective slip on the surface, fully submerged in moving water. Although wide range of applications (e.g., skin-friction drag reduction, self-cleaning, microfluidic devices, anti-biofouling, and anti-fogging/icing, to name a few) have been explored, one of the highly anticipated impacts of SHPo surfaces is reduction of skin-friction drag on solid objects moving in water, thereby achieving substantial energy savings and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Recent success in the wettability control of liquid droplets and in the slips and drag reductions obtained on engineered SHPo surfaces in laminar flows have heightened the anticipation that someday an appreciable reduction can be reliably obtained in turbulent flows as well, which has actually appeared to be inconsistent and unconvincing so far. In the present talk, our recent progress in successful application of SHPo surfaces for reducing skin-friction drag in turbulent flows will be introduced and future outlook will be discussed.

Dr. Hyungmin Park received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea at 2000 and 2010, respectively. Between 2000 and 2003, he also worked at the Special and Naval Shipbuilding Division in Hyundai Heavy Industries. After his Ph.D. degree, he joined University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Seoul National University. He is a recipient of the 2010 Best Ph.D. Thesis Paper Award granted by the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers, Division of Fluid Dynamics. Dr. Park’s research is mostly based on the experimental and analytical approaches and covers (i) multiphase flow physics (ii) turbulent flow control with superhydrophobic surface, and (iii) fluid-structure interaction.
