Microfluidics that can accurately control extremely small amount of liquid samples together with various micro/nano fabrication technologies enable the concept of lab-on-a-chip systems. Our lab is interested in solving grand challenge problems in the broad area of health and energy through the use of micro/nano systems technology. Research themes in our lab range from developing organ-on-a-chip systems, developing systems for high-throughput single-cell physiochemical analysis of cancer cells, systems that enable us to understand physiology and functions in infectious disease, to systems that enable the concept of microbial biorefinary.
The focus of this presentation will be on the concept of microbial biorefinary, and how microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems can accelerate R&D in this emerging field of next-generation bioenergy production. Microalgae are envisioned as a future source of renewable oil. The feasibility of producing transportation grade hydrocarbons from microalgae is strongly dependent on developing better algal strains, understanding algal gene regulation, and optimizing growth conditions for higher oil production. Three examples of microfluidics-based systems that aims to significantly improve the algae to biofuel development pipeline will be presented. The first example is a high-throughput photobioreactor array as a photosynthetic organism screening/analyses platform that is currently being used to identify and define metabolic processes and genetic constraints that significantly enhance oil production and growth of microalgae. The second example is a microfluidic single-cell screening/selection platform that allows selecting cells of interest from a large library of genetically engineered or mutagenized microalgae. The third example is a droplet microfluidics based algal screening platform for rapid screening of algal library generated through genetic, metabolic, and mutagenic engineering. We believe that microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip platforms will be key technologies in bringing algal biofuel as a economically feasible next-generation transportation fuel.
