The optimal design and implementation of new armor systems need to be underpinned by the fundamental understanding of high strain rate dynamics and subsequent material response and failure mechanisms during the impact and penetration events. Fundamental work has been performed with the goal of developing new armor topologies that consider shock, dwell, erosion, and subsequent penetration time history to guide armor architecture configurations. A novel architecture of an advanced ceramic armor system is presented which consists of three dimensional arrays of nested ceramic prisms that fully tessellate the armor surface and increases penetrator erosion through rubble bed confinement and shock wave control resulting in excellent performance coupled with multi-hit capability. Development was guided heavily by the judicious use of numerical predictions correlated with ballistic testing and post-test failure morphology investigations. Both commonly used phenomenological and recently developed mechanism-based constitutive models for ceramic materials have been evaluated. Test results substantially confirmed the numerical predictions for the projectile containment, the damage propagation through the array of prisms and the extent of the damaged zone in the armor system.
