Introduction to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center
This presentation introduces the mission and activities in Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) briefly. ORNL is a multiprogram science and technology national laboratory managed for the United States Department of Energy (DOE) by UT-Battelle. ORNL is the DOE's largest science and energy laboratory. ORNL is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near Knoxville. Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct basic and applied research and development to create scientific knowledge and technological solutions that build the nation's expertise in key areas of science; increase the availability of clean, abundant energy; restore and protect the environment; and contribute to national security.

High Efficiency Clean Combustion (HECC) Research at ORNL (multi-cylinder lightduty diesel engine)
This presentation deals with the HECC research activities in detail. Advanced combustion modes such as premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) have shown promises as potential paths for meeting 2010 and beyond efficiency and emission goals. ORNL, as well as others, have shown success in achieving reduced emissions and acceptable efficiency using high charge dilution for a somewhat limited speed-load range. As an example of the HECC activities at the FEERC, one of the studies performed at the FEERC, which characterizes the effects of mixed-source EGR (a combination of high pressure loop EGR and low pressure loop EGR) for enabling HECC operation through precise control of intake charge temperature, is discussed. The potential of mixedsource EGR has been explored for achieving HECC modes in a light-duty diesel engine in this study. Mixed-source EGR mode is a reasonable approach for controlling intake mixture temperature and engine emissions.
