5. 내 용: Small scale engineering, as will be presented in this talk, provides not only a characterization methodology at micro/nanoscale but also excellent opportunities to build useful devices such as micro and nanoelectronics components and ultra-sensitive sensors. I would like to introduce a few approaches in small scale characterization of thermal systems, e.g., one-dimensional and two-dimensional nanostructures, and nanofluids. The first approach is related to nanomanufacturing of a measurement platform to characterize thermoelectric properties of one-dimensional nanosystems such as carbon nanotubes and nanowires. This approach focuses on in situ measurements of thermal and electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient in one single measurement platform. To this end, a microfabricated device which is subsequently tailored by focused ion beam (FIB) is used to place a single nanowire across the designated metal electrodes. Nanomanufacturing by FIB was implemented to provide a platform for nanoscale measurement. In the second approach, we have demonstrated a novel technology to obtain few-layers of graphene through a mechanical exfoliation method. The technology originally developed inside the vacuum chamber (in Dual FIB) is currently being developed in an open-air environment, which shows a great potential in top-down scalable nanomanufacturing of high-quality graphene. Lastly, a microsensing technology has been adopted to characterize 2-dimensional nanostructures (e.g., carbon nanotube films) and carbon nanotube nanofluids. This technology will further be applicable to other nanostystems and microsystems including nuclear reactor materials and biological systems, as will be introduced as future research topics.
