Recent developments in the aircraft industry towards significantly improving fuel economy have accelerated interest in the use of advanced composites as primary structural materials. The airframes of next generation airliners will have substantial parts made of unprecedented amount of light-weight composites. However, impact damage remains a major concern in laminated composite structures, as accidental impact causes damage, which severely reduces structural strength and stability. The first part of the talk will focus on using through-thickness stitching as an effective interlaminar reinforcement technique to increase the impact resistance and damage tolerance of laminated composites. State–of–the–art non-destructive inspection (NDI) techniques are applied to elucidate complex damage phenomenon and multi-scale failure mechanisms in stitched composites. The improvement in Compression After Impact (CAI) strength of stitched composites is also demonstrated and examined. In addition, the talk will focus on the novel and emerging field of mechanical metamaterials, in which materials exhibit unique properties such as negative effective mass density, thereby more capable of increasing the impact resistance of composite structures. Interesting application examples in vibration control, impact wave attenuation, and blast-wave mitigation will be presented. Potential future research using mechanical metamaterials for aerospace, defense, biomedical and energy applications will be discussed
